  1. This chapter was really blunt with social issues. Racism, homophobia, sexuality and eating disorders were in these past couple of chapters, and I think it's important that these issues are discussed because you can't avoid running into these issues in the real world.
You can't just block out all of these issues, so we need to familiarize students with these issues, so I think it is very important for students to read this book. Whether it's a friend, family member or co-worker, you're going to eventually run into one of these problems.

  2. When Junior is in Science class talking about wood, he raises his hand correcting his teacher about how wood isn't really wood. Junior explains it but his teacher doesn't like believe him. The teacher Dodge basically just doesn't believe him and asks if he learned it on the reservation. Then the 'Class Genius', Gordy raises his hand and says that Junior is right. Dodge doesn't really say anything but thanks Gordy for sharing. It was basically showing that they don't care about the Indians had to really say and it was only true if the white people agreed or said it was true.
Something else that was how Junior and Gordy became friends. Junior tried talking to him and Gordy found him weird but then realized that him and Junior are the kind of the same. Him and Gordy become friends, not the best of friends but get a good close relationship. Gordy teaches him how to read, study and explained a lot of stuff to Junior that he didn't know and just believed in him. It could be talked about because it just explains what happens in their friendship and how it happens.

    1. WHY should they be discussed? Do these topics belong in a school setting, in a novel discussed in schoo? Why? Why not?

  4. Some of the subjects brought up in the book are surprisingly deep, like bulimia and depression. The character Penelope is bulimic and when she opened up to the main character Junior it was hinted that she is also depressed. These subjects are serious and should be discussed in classes so that students are aware.
Racism has also been brought up and the main character has been a victim. Racism can be hurtful and can cause insecurities. Talking about the long term affects in classes can help prevent and end racism.

  5. Racism and bulimia are very controversal issues. People don't generally like to be spoken to about issues that should have ended by now. It makes many people uncomfortable, and they dislike these subjects being brought up. People dislike talking about bulimia because people can actual die by being bulimic, by starving themselves.

Racism is also very controlversal because people don't like to be reminded that they lynched human beings, that people were given hunting licenses, the ability and permission to kill other people. I think it's great that Alexie talks about these sensitive subjects, because we need to learn and understand the damage these things can cause.

  6. I find it ridiculous how in chapter Slouching Towards Thanksgiving, they don't like to accept that Junior is smart just because of the color of his skin and race. This is something that happens everywhere and I guess we just never pay attention to it. I think its something that should be discussed because you should never be judge by the color of your skin, gender, religion ect. People need to be more aware of the fact that this does happen at some schools (not talking about JDHS)
The other thing talked about in this box was eating disorders, we should talk about it even though it's a sensitive topic.

  7. Bulimia, and alcoholism. People can die form these things, such as to much to drink and you get Alcohol poison. The people can damage their esophagus's, your hair falls out, blood sugar goes up. Not good for you to do this, so I do think we should talk about it.

For the Alcoholism, people really do die from this, they can kill themselves and kill others when they are in a situation where others are involved. People damage their livers, which can lead to them poisoning their blood.

  8. Reading this book so far I have been shocked by the things it brings up. But it's not all bad.. It's a part of life. This book isn't a bad thing for kids to read it's things that happen in everyday life that the writer didn't pretend wasn't real as they were writing it.

I believe this book should be discussed because people keep on going back and forth trying to decide if it is a book that's ok for kids to read.. They need to decide, is it okay for kids to read books that bring up racism? Makes sexual jokes? etc.. This must be decided

    1. Why should this book be read? Why should we discuss these issues in school or in a novel that's used in school? Please answer that part of the prompt.

  9. In the this following chapter of The Diary of a Part-Time Indian, we read about multiple topics that make people feel rather uncomfertable in there young adult lifes. I feel like they shouldnt feel that way but rather be comertable with the topics and have conversations about them. People in my opinion should not just shut it out because its different or not the social norm. What the hell is even social norm? Now im not being an over actavist that says "Im normal, your the weird on" no im not that type of person.
But i feel like at an early age kids should have the access to these topics for a chance to decide wether or not they agree with whatever it is or be able to accept it and choose not do it.
