The Crucible - reflecting on Proctor

How does Arthur Miller develop John Proctor's character in Act I by juxtaposing him against Reverend Hale or Giles Corey?  Use specific examples from the play as evidence. This is a timed writing exercise so use your twenty minutes wisely. (DUE: 2/18, Wednesday)

  1. Proctor is a farmer and his wife is Elizabeth. He is a powerful and prideful man, and will not follow anyone he believes is a hypocrite. After his affair with Abigail Williams, he sees himself as a hypocrite and lost self respect.
Reverend Hale is a innocent man with good morals. He is intelligent, and is believed to be an expert at identifying witch craft.

  2. John Procter is a farmer who is not as connected to God as the rest of Salem is. Procter only wishes to live his life in peace and leave his past behind him. His past of adultery is starting to catch up with him when Abigail accuses Procter's wife of bewitching her. Procter fears the embarrassment and shame more than the punishment of God.

Reverend Hale is a strong believer in God and only wishes to make things right, he is an intellectual who specializes in the "invisible world" . Hale's attempt to solve the Salem crisis has the right intentions, but fails in execution.

John Procter and Reverend Hale, both believe in Christianity but John Procter is only loosely Christian. Procter doesn't believe in witchcraft or the existence of the "invisible world". Hale on the other hand, is a full on Christian who believes the "invisible world" is very real and the girls of Salem are being bewitched. Hale tries his best not to sin and tries keep things in order during the middle of the Salem witchcraft hysteria.

  3. Proctor is loosely christian. In the story so far he seems to be the only one with common sense, as he is not taken in by the tales of witchcraft. He is one of the only characters I've seen so far with a "human" attitude, admitting to his faults while still feeling guilty of them. So far Proctor has been the only one to call others out on the bullcrap they're spouting. Proctor is also one of the only characters who seems to want to try to make them stop crying witch.

Hale on the other hand is a devout christian, a preacher of God. He was called because he was well read on the dealings of the occult and of dark magics. He seems to see witchery where there is none. Though he is a good man, he is also misguided by the townsfolk who wish to use him to lay proof of witchcraft to people who have more land, money, ect.

By setting such a level-headed, guilt-ridden man as Proctor against the man of God and of the people, Reverend Hale we see that there is a great amount of difference within the town. By showing such we can see that Proctor has an amazing amount of depth to his character. His motives are well thought out, and his guilt and anger seem to be what drives him.

  4. 1) Proctor is a guy with a good head on his shoulders, but everyone has rumors about him that may be false. He is what is see as what the town likes to play with with their free time, or when they have nothing to talk about. He is also a rebel at times.
    2) Hale is a guy who like to have attention, but not a so much where he has the whole spot light. Being this is his first call he may be happy, but very confused for what is and what is not true.
    3) Arthur made this character of John by making him in mind like Hale but wiser in areas where Hale is not. He made John by making his whole personality different from Hale to give it a clear view that they may cross paths and not agree right away but agree in another time.

  5. John Proctor is a decent man at heart but one that makes mistakes. His and religion forces him to try to right the wrongs he makes almost immediately. Although he is religious he is not overly so unlike most of salem for example he dose not know all of the commandments by heart but he dose try to follow them. The only blemish in his reputation is his affair with Abigail, this shows that although John is strong physically and mentally his spiritual self has moments of weakness but overall is sturdy.
Reverend Hale is a very religious man who tries his hardest to be good. In this way he is both similar to Proctor but also his opposite. Both of them try to be good men but fail at times. Reverend truly believed the girls were afflicted and thought that witchcraft and satan was in Salem. Like Proctor he attempted to fix his mistakes so far in vain. The major differnces between these two men is John weakness of faith were John is weaker the Reverend is stronger.

  6. John Proctor is a hard working man who has done somethings that he is ashamed of, but would do anything for his wife goody proctor. He does believes in god but does not always go to church every sabbath day, because he does not see the "light of god" in reverend Parris. John Proctor has three children all boys DNF

  7. John Proctor is a farmer. He is christian but not enough for the people in the village to believe him. He is uneasy with himself because of the affair he had with Abigail but he still shows confidence. Reverend Hale is a minster who is an expert in whichcraft. He is a committed christian and hates which craft. He is also very intelligent. Hale and Proctor both think alike. They are smart in their own ways. Mr Proctor has conflict with Reverend Hale in Act 1 because he thinks that Proctor (Not finish)

  8. Reverend Hale is Hardcore Christian who thinks his religion can do no wrong and stands by his beliefs no matter how wrong or unfair they make things at times, Reverend Hale however is not a bad man, just a little naive, unlike most of the other villagers he does have a conscience and knows that something is wrong when he sees it only he just believes too much in his religion to speak against it.
John Proctor is a strong willed farmer who believes in the Christian faith but does not let it control him unlike the other villagers, he makes his own decisions and speaks against the things he sees wrong or unfair, even if he has to speak against the bible. His hot head although being a tool to help him stand up against others is also the thing that bites back at him in the end.

  9. John Proctor is someone who has confidence in himself and what he says. He's also the kind of man not easily led and cannot refuse to support to partisans without drawing their deepest resentment. He's known for telling lies about other people and doesn't really care.
Reverend Hale is the whole kind of opposite of John Proctor. Hale is very Christian and goes by the rules and doesn't like to deal with sex, sins or the devil. He believes he had contact with devil and argued about theology with him. His goal is light goodness and its preservation, and he knows the exaltation of the blessed whose intelligence, sharpened by the minute examinations of enormous tracts, is finally called upon to face what may be a bloody fight with the Friend himself.
