TTTC: Speaking of Courage

"Courage was not always a matter of yes or no" (p.147).
"Sometimes....the difference between courage and cowardice was something small and stupid" (147).

Use this or another quote on courage and discuss what courage means and how this defined and affected Norman Bowker.

  1. people may think that he is not a coward, but to him losing Iowa was big, yeah it was big for others. But for him to be saving him and can't, thats big. For him that is a coward in his eyes. Others it's not.

Throughout the chapter Norman Baker talks about how he wasn't courageous enough to save Kiowa, but really it was brave of him not to save Kiowa. If he had stayed and tried to save Kiowa, he would've been killed also.

  3. in this book i would say courage is being brave or doing the right thing in a life or death situation without thinking about yourself. i think Norman Bowker feels guilty because he wasn't able to save Kiowa and he probably feels like he wasn't courageous.

  4. Courage means to face something dangerous and have to fear on doing it, which leads to bravery. Norman wasn't couraged on saving kiowa.

in my opinion is a matter of doing what needs to be done despite the fear you may be feeling. courage is when you are afraid but you still do what must be done even if you dont succeedlike when he tried to save Kiowa.

  6. "Sometimes you were very brave up to the point and then beyond that point you were very not so brave." (p.147) My definition of courage is that you have to go through something so painful, mentally and that the pain is the fear of having to go through it. The quote I chose I think relates to how Norman couldn't save Kiowa at the shit field because he was so brave at the point when trying to save him but at the last moment of him trying to save Kiowa he was beyond his point of his own bravery and lost his courage and couldn't do it anymore.
